I am so excited to share this DIY Boho, Merry & Bright Wall Decor with all of you! I have had it up for a few weeks now and it truly makes me smile every time I walk up my stairs. I feel like I brought some Anthropologie vibes into my home with this one and I am so obsessed! I will be sharing everything you need to make this cheery and bright, boho wall decor along with some tips on how I put it all together! I hope you love this as much as I do, now let’s get into the details!

Before you get started, consider brainstorming some words that remind you of Christmas. This fun little step really helped get me in the Christmas spirit and made this DIY even more meaningful to me. While shopping for your words keep in mind that you may find what you are looking for on gift tags and stocking tags, along with ornaments. You can also always write your own! I’ve provided a few links to help you get some ideas on what to use but I also encourage you find ornaments that match your own Christmas decor and again, that are meaningful to you.

All The Steps

Once you have shopped for your ornaments and have handwritten any that you weren’t able to find, you are ready to get started making your wall decor.

Step 1 – Cut Pieces of Yarn, Tulle & Twine

Start by cutting multiple pieces of yarn all the same size. I personally wanted my longest ornament to hang about 3 feet so I cut all of the pieces approximately 6 feet each. Whatever length you want your longest ornament to hang you will double it since you will be using the larkshead knot to attach them to the copper pole. You will do the same for both the tulle and the twine.

Step 2 – Attach String to Copper Pole

Once you have all of your yarn, twine and tulle cut start adding individual pieces to the the copper pole using the reverse larkshead knot. If you are not familiar with macrame knots, you can find a good tutorial on this particular knot here. I liked the look of the yarn best so I attached two of the yarn pieces and then alternated between the tulle and the twine. Here is the pattern I used: yarn, yarn, tulle, yarn, yarn, twine. To make it a lot easier to attach the pieces, I set the copper pole up across the top of two of my barstools instead of working on the floor.

Step 3 – Group and Attach Ornaments

Once you have attached your string, you are to start adding your ornaments. I found it easiest to begin by laying out the ornaments in categories. I grouped the stars, the glass ball ornaments, my Christmas word ornaments and all the different bells and macrame accents, together. This will be so helpful when you are attaching the ornaments to make sure you are spacing out each grouping as you go.

To attach the ornaments you will simply double knot each one at the length you want it to hang. I waited to cut the excess string just in case I needed to adjust the length at the end. To give heavier ornaments more support I knotted it a few times an inch apart going up the yarn. I loved how this ended up looking so I started doing it on a few lighter ornaments as well. I also tried to hang any of the heavier ornaments on the twine since it is stronger than the yarn and tulle.

As you go along you will simply continue to attach the ornaments at various lengths, filling in any holes or gaps as you go. I knew I wanted the bottom layer to form a soft V, with the longest point in the middle so I kept that in mind as I was deciding on the length for each ornament.

If you decide to use the wooden nutcrackers, you will need to attach a small screw hook to the top in order to cleanly hang it from the string. This was rather simple to do so don’t let his extra step keep you from using the nutcrackers as I truly think they are the perfect festive addition.

I saved the bells for last knowing they were smaller and would be easy fillers after I had all the bigger ornaments spaced out how I liked.

Step 4 – Clean It Up

Once you have attached everything you want to use you will go through and clean everything up by cutting any excess string and removing any extra yarn, twine or tulle from the pole that you didn’t end up using. I also went through and dabbed a little hot glue over the knot on the heavier ornaments, just to make sure they would be secure.

Step 5 – Attach Festive Garland

If you have a festive garland to add at that top, tie it to each end of the copper pole at the length you want it to hang. This is definitely not necessary as I thought it was gorgeous either way but I loved that the one I used was white and blended in well. It also gave it just a little extra festive cheer!

Step 6 – Secure to Wall

Now that your wall decor is complete, it is time to hang it. I attached the copper pole above the window on my stairs with nails and copper tube straps. You could also tie twine to the copper pole on each end and hang it on a secure nail from the center. There are definitely options when it comes to hanging this on the wall. I intended to hang this on the blank wall I have heading up my stairs but I’m so glad I went with the window instead. I love how the sun hits it at different points during the day. I think it would look great above a fireplace mantel as well!

There you have it, a boho inspired, festive wall decor that will give you all the Anthropologie vibes you need in your home for the Holidays! This has truly been my favorite DIY yet as I love how customizable and meaningful you can make it. If you end up making this wall decor for your home, I would love to see it!
