It’s time for the long awaited summer days and with it comes beach trips, ice cream runs and dried palm leaves for your home of course! In this blog I will be showing you how I transformed some thrifted vases into an amazing summer focal point in our dinning room. I will be sharing two DIYs; clay textured vases using baking soda and some faux palm leaves using construction paper. Both are fairly simple and so so worth the stunning outcome. I love the look of mixing the dried palms and florals with the DIY faux paper palms as it makes the paper palms appear more real and allows you to customize your color pallet! With that said I have linked all of the floral I used along with everything you will need for both DIYs. Now, let’s get into it!
What You'll Need:
Clay Textured Vases: Thrifted Vases | Acrylic Paint | Baking Soda | Paint Brush
Faux Paper Palm Leaves: Construction Paper | Wooden Dowels | Floral Tape | Scissors
Dried Florals: Natural Tan Palm Leave Fan | Dried Pink Banksia | Dried Orange Banksia | Coral Dipsacus Thistle | Terracotta Orange Dried Palm Spears | Natural Dried Palm Spears | Fuchsia Red Protea Repens | Natutal Sun Palm Leaves
Clay Textured Vases
Step 1: Shop your house, the clearance sections at stores or even thrift stores for various glass vases.
Step 2: Using sand paper, sand the glass vases to rough up the surface allowing the paint to stick easier. *I thought I had sand paper and didn’t so I used a couple nail files instead and that worked just fine too.
Step 3: Mix your paint with the baking soda. I added the baking soda slowly until I got a runny peanut butter consistency, not too thick.
Step 4: Start painting the vases. It took just two coats for me but you do need to make sure the first coat is completely dry before starting the second. The second coat will feel like you’re painting frosting on a cake.
Step 5: Once the vases are completely dry, I sealed them with a clear acrylic sealer.
Faux Paper Palm Leaves
Step 1: Fan fold your construction paper
Step 2: Flatten out your paper and then fold in half.
Step 3: Cut a rounded triangle and unfold your paper.
Step 4: Cut every other fold about half way down the paper.
Step 5: You can leave as is at this point or cut the tips into triangles for a slightly different look.
Step 6: Gather your construction paper at the bottom and hold together with a piece of tap or just by using your fingers to prepare for the next step.
Step 7: Insert a wooden dowel into the center fold of the paper to create a stem. Then wrap the bottom gathered end of the paper using floral tape and continue down the wooden dowel.
Such a relatively easy DIY and the outcome is seriously to die for! I love how versatile these vases will be from season to season, making this DIY a must do in my opinion!
As always, thank you so much for reading! Stay tuned for a complete summer home decor blog post coming soon!
